Since 2006, College Bound Opportunities (CBO) has been mentoring under-resourced students in the Northern suburbs of Lake County and motivating them to realize their potential as students and become productive members of their communities. Although Lake County encompasses some of the most affluent communities in Illinois, there is a substantial population of lower-income residents. Despite the heavy financial burden this poses, families often choose to live in these suburbs because of the outstanding public education their children receive. Created by a group of individuals committed to ensuring students are afforded the opportunity to attend college regardless of their economic circumstances, CBO mentors economically disadvantaged students to unleash their potential, graduate college, pursue meaningful professions, and inspire others to follow in their footsteps.
What sets CBO apart is its long-term commitment to the students it supports through 1:1 mentoring from the time they are accepted into the program in high school through college graduation and, oftentimes, beyond. CBO currently supports 66 students (30 seniors and 36 Juniors) at Highland Park, Deerfield, and Lake Forest high schools, and Cristo Rey St. Martin in Waukegan.Additionally, CBO supports134 Scholars in college and universities across the country, and has successfully helped 67 Scholars graduate from college. We are fortunate to work with, more than 200 volunteer mentors to support each Scholar’s journey through college.
