  • Deerfield Considers New Regulations for Electric Scooters and Motor-Driven Vehicles

The village of Deerfield Board of Trustees is reviewing a proposed ordinance aimed at regulating the use of motor-driven vehicles, including electric scooters and gas-powered bikes, in public spaces. The move comes after residents raised concerns and reported accidents involving these vehicles. The proposed rules would restrict use to streets with speed limits of 25 mph or less and prohibit operation on sidewalks, bike paths, parks, and other public areas. Riders would be required to follow all traffic laws, and age limits would apply depending on the type of vehicles. The ordinance excludes mobility devices for people with disabilities and toy vehicles for children. Initial fines for violations would begin at $100, and parent or guardian could be held responsible for minors. The Village Board will hold a first reading ordinance on May 5, with final consideration expected on May 19.
